Live VR Broadcast · Case Study
NBA in
Virtual Reality
Live sports broadcasting in virtual reality: when the NBA set out to cement its reputation as a technology innovator, it collaborated with NextVR and Galvanized founder Danny Keens to produce and stream 100+ live NBA games in 3D stereoscopic VR — delivered from the arena to headsets worldwide, and the blueprint for Galvanized’s immersive media solutions for live sports and events.
The Challenge
Live Sport in Virtual Reality
When the NBA aimed to bolster its reputation as a technology innovator by broadcasting live games in virtual reality, it collaborated with NextVR and Galvanized founder Danny Keens to tackle the ambitious challenge.
The project overcame intricate logistics and production obstacles — including managing real-time event coverage — to successfully produce and stream over 100 live NBA games in a 3D stereoscopic format to viewers watching in a virtual reality environment.
It demanded meticulous planning and coordination to guarantee high-quality immersive experiences for every viewer, pushing the boundaries of sports broadcasting technology.
Inside the Production
The Camera Plan
Multiple stereoscopic cameras, one live stream. Every position had a job — and every cut between them was designed to orient the viewer, never disorient them. Select a position to see how the broadcast was built.
Under the basket
Stereoscopic rigs at the stanchion put viewers on the baseline — the closest seat in the house. But cutting from an angle this close is exactly where disorientation begins, so every move away from it was planned in advance.
The Broadcast
From the Arena to Headsets Worldwide
At NextVR, Galvanized’s founder played a crucial role in forging the partnership with the NBA to produce live game broadcasts in virtual reality. NextVR’s technology used multiple cameras to create a single live broadcast stream — carried from the stadium into VR headsets around the world.
The team coordinated logistics, managed live broadcast feeds in real time, and engineered seamless transitions between camera angles without disorienting viewers — the production craft that makes live immersive sports watchable.
The result: critically acclaimed sports broadcasts and visually stunning immersive experiences that brought fans closer to the action than ever before.
More than 100 live VR broadcasts set a new standard for live sports coverage. The NBA’s embrace of the technology cemented its position as a leader in sports innovation — and NextVR’s solution proved the future of live event broadcasting in virtual reality, leading to the company’s acquisition by a global technology company.
